A district school in Philadelphia caught its student red handed, while at home misbehaving. The situation has brought the school in limelight for using a Mac Book as a remote spy agent for the students. However the images captured by the webcam have ranged a high privacy alarm on the head of class-action lawsuit, according to which the schools are spying the students in their homes allegedly.
The superintendent of Lower Merion School, Pennsylvania, announced a statement and giving a nod that t the MacBook cameras can be remotely activated without the user’s knowledge. He also claimed that the remote webcam is meant for detecting theft, as a means of security.
McGinley, in his letter suggested a revised plan, taking proper care for security concerns, on the Lower Merton School District’s Web site. Further he promised few things to be mentioned as:
• Immediate call back of the security-tracking program.
• A thorough review of the existing policies for student laptop use.
• A review of security procedures to help safeguard the protection of privacy, including a review of the instances in which the security software was activated. We want to ensure that any affected students and families are made aware of the outcome of laptop recovery investigations.
• A review of any other technology areas in which the intersection of privacy and security may come into play.
While ending the letter he regretted for the situation aroused and the inconvenience caused to the students as well as their families.
However regretting for inconvenience is a very pity word for the young student whose photographs are in question now, as the images taken from the security device, was of sexual nature, which could turn into a case of pornography of young student.
To bring the mission to action the school decided to distribute MacBooks amongst 2300 students in the Lower Merton School District. Now the controversy is, that if this incident voices up and takes a massive scene then the reputation of school is at stake, simultaneously leading the donation project of laptops to school to hit a dead end forever
