If there is a down side to summer, it's that homes are more at risk of being burglarized than any other time of year.
Enjoying the warm, fresh air, family members can become lax about leaving doors, windows and blinds open. What's more, summer is when families like to get away.
"Summer is a peak season for break-ins because homeowners often spend more time away from their homes for family vacations or local activities," says Clint Briscoe, who represents kudzu.com, a site that helps homeowners plan home projects and find contractors.
Briscoe says burglary victims suffer an average of $2,096 in property loss. Popular targets are cash and items that can easily be carried and resold, such as jewelry, handguns and electronics. A lot of intruders head to the master bedroom first because that is generally where most people keep such valuables. Prescription drugs are sought after, too.
Installing an alarm system is one step that a homeowner can take to decrease the risk of burglary.
