STOCKTON, CA - As Stockton residents deal with a startling increase in violent activity around the city, the response by many is to buy a home security camera system.
"We had an increase in sales of 50 percent over the last year," said Michelle Johle of Harbor Freight Tools.
Johle said customers tell her staff they're concerned about Stockton's crime situation.
"A lot of them want to know how far the angles of the camera will go. They have a lot of vandalism and theft in their neighborhoods," said Johle.
Even though Radio Shack doesn't provide specific sales numbers, clerks at two Stockton outlets also reported a greater interest in home camera systems.
Alyssa Wray of Stockton had cameras installed after the theft of her car.
"With a decent camera you can see what time it happened and potentially a license plate, which can be helpful to an investigation," said Wray.
Stockton police spokesman Officer Pete Smith said the department welcomes any information or images that help an investigation. Smith has previously said crime increases are likely related to the loss of about 100 officers to budget cuts.
